Youth / Adult Sailing Scheme – Course Dates and Information 2018 (for children aged 8 – 15) Hobie Dragoon – Introduction to Racing (for children aged 12+)

Please see below our initial program for 2018.  As these courses fill up we will expand the program as required by demand.

Sailing is weather dependent.  We will not go afloat if the conditions are unsuitable.  There is a certain amount of work that is required to be done ashore on all courses, where possible we will adapt the course program to work around the weather.  If we loose more than one day afloat due to weather the Youth Learn to Sail courses allow the possibility of using Friday as a spare day.  Otherwise, unfortunately, the weather is a risk involved in undertaking a sailing course that must be expected.

Correct clothing is very important for sailing.  It always feels colder afloat than it does ashore.  Children have a higher ratio of surface are to volume than adults, and get cold more easily.  You are also exposed to the sun afloat.

Wetsuits are ideal for dinghy sailing and can be supplemented with a stray top which helps protect from wind and water.  Wetsuit boots or sailing shoes are a must to protect feet.  Buoyancy aids or P.F.D’s (Personal flotation devices) must fit properly.  If the P.F.D can pull off over the weavers head it is too big.  Peaked caps in sunny conditions and woolly or fleece hats in cold conditions are advised.

For Wayfarers, warm clothing and waterproofs are a viable alternative to wetsuits.

Note; we take the age of a child as his or her age on the 31st December.

YOUTH LEARNING SAIL COURSES

This course will be taught by RYA qualified instructors and will follow the RYA Youth Scheme stages one to three syllabus.

These will be run mainly in Optimist Dinghies for 8-15 year olds.  The optimist is a small dinghy and may be too small for some of the older children, particularly 15 year old boys.  If you have a child who wants to do this course but is too big for an Optimist (over 55/60kgs) please contact us; with sufficient demand there are other possibilities in Lasers, Wayfarers or Multihulls.

YOUTH START AND IMPROVE RACING

The course will be taught by RYA qualified instructors and will follow the RYA Start Racing, Intermediate Racing and Advanced Racing courses. syllabus and beyond this will provide race coaching.

The course will be run mainly in Dragoon multihulls, with the possibility of the older and more advanced sailors to progress to Hobie 16’s.

This course is aimed at 12 – 16 year old’s but there is some flexibility.  With this, participants should have previous sailing experience, and be at a level of Stage 3.  We can accommodate less experienced sailors on this course in a crewing role.  They will gain some experience of racing, but should undertake the Youth Learn to Sail course to develop their ability.

WAYFARER SAILING – YOUTH AND ADULT

Wayfarers are large, very stable dinghies that offer a variety of opportunities for training.  All courses will be taught by RYA qualified instructors and will follow the RYA Youth or National Scheme syllabus.

With the Wayfarer courses we can offer a course that best suits individual requirements.  For example; less confident sailors can learn to sail and develop their sailing with an instructor in the same boat as themselves; with or without an instructor in the same boat, the wayfarers are large enough to accommodate any size of adult or larger children; we can also offer courses in Wayfarers or Seamanship Skills, Day Sailing and Sailing with Spinnakers.

YOUTH LEARN TO SAIL – EARLY BIRD COURSE – £85
